What is Secondary Glazing?

The Smart Alternative to Replacing Your Windows

Secondary glazing is a low-cost technique used to increase your home's warmth and decrease condensation. It helps insulate existing single and double-glazed windows by adding an inconspicuous additional layer of glass positioned inside the window frame.

It also decreases noise pollution and improves house security. Secondary glazing is a simple and cost-effective technique to properly insulate single-glazed windows and save money on energy costs. The installation process involves an additional window which is simply attached to an existing window.

In addition to providing insulation, this additional glass protects the window and works as a soundproofing mechanism. Our products are cost-effective, simple to install, and stylish.

Key Benefits

Why Secondary Glazing is the Right Choice

Secondary glazing allows you to experience the warmth, security, and tranquillity of double glazing without having to replace your current windows.

Improved Acoustic Performance

Secondary glazing is a tried and true means of decreasing outside noise from traffic, airports, industrial estates, and normal street noise. Sound transmission can be reduced by up to 70%, and with proper specification, acoustic performance of up to 80% is achievable. Because a significantly greater air gap is possible between panes, secondary glazing often outperforms double and triple glazing for sound reduction.

Improved Thermal Insulation

Increasing thermal insulation in your home will not only make rooms seem significantly warmer but will also result in lower energy usage. Aluminium secondary glazing is particularly developed to improve thermal protection by up to 60%. Installing secondary glass in your home or business might help you achieve energy efficiency savings of up to 60%, as well as the associated lower heating bills. With a large enough gap, you could see a room temperature improvement of up to 4°C.

Enhanced Security

A secondary glazed panel adds another security barrier to potential intruders. This type of glazing is designed to be exceedingly difficult to open from the outside; the glass panels lock into place to provide a secure barrier. The aluminium exterior frame is mechanically linked with strong metal studs, which reinforce and rigidify the frame. Durable secondary glazing produces a subtle and unobtrusive barrier that aids in protection against forced access.

Prevents Condensation

Do you have a condensation problem in your home? In most circumstances, installing secondary glazing will remove all condensation. Secondary glazing helps maintain heat in the home, causing less moisture to condense. By insulating windows — the most common site for condensation — it can absolutely prevent serious condensation from forming. This is particularly valuable in older properties with single-glazed windows where condensation is a persistent issue.

Environmentally Friendly

Renovating and repairing existing windows reduces waste and the environmental damage caused by the production of replacement uPVC windows. By retaining your existing window frames and simply adding a secondary layer, you avoid sending materials to landfill. Lower heating bills also mean a reduced carbon footprint. Secondary glazing is one of the most eco-friendly ways to improve the energy efficiency of your property.

Increased Property Value

Estate agents generally agree that adding secondary glazing to your property will increase its market value. If you have added secondary glazing to minimise noise in the home, this value will be noticeable whether working or sleeping, and would be a terrific selling factor. Reduced heat loss, improved security, and condensation prevention all contribute to a more attractive property for potential buyers.

Pricing

Secondary Glazing Cost

Secondary glazing can cost between £300–£500 per pane. This type of glazing is far less expensive than new windows, and the installation is a lot easier, less messy, and much faster.

All we require for a quote is an image of the current window and some dimensions. We can advise and quote you without coming to your home.

Factors That Affect the Cost

Several factors influence the final price of secondary glazing. Here is a breakdown of the key considerations:

  • Window Size
Larger windows require more material and take longer to install, increasing the cost.
  • Type of Operation
Fixed or lift-out units are less expensive than sliding or hinged configurations.
  • Glass Specification
Toughened, laminated, Low-E or STADIP acoustic glass can add up to £60/m² to the cost.
  • Frame Thickness & Profile
Heavy-duty systems with thicker aluminium profiles cost more than standard options.
  • Supply Only or Supply & Install
Supply-only pricing differs from our full supply and installation packages.
  • Number of Windows
Multi-window projects benefit from volume discounts — the more windows, the better value.

Comparison

Secondary Glazing vs Double Glazing

If sound insulation is your ultimate aim, secondary glazing is often the superior choice. Because a significantly greater air cavity is possible between panes, it provides far superior acoustic insulation than traditional double glazing.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about secondary glazing — from glass thickness to installation, cost savings to maintenance.

What thickness of secondary glazing do I need?

In most cases, we recommend a thickness of 4mm for secondary glazing with flexible installation. The insulating tape and glazing clips will fit perfectly on secondary glazing of this thickness. We recommend 4mm for fixed installation on windows up to 2 metres long, and 5mm for fixed installation on windows between 2–3 metres. Thinner or thicker sheets may not insulate adequately due to fitting issues with standard tape and clips.

Should I use 2mm or 3mm secondary glazing?

In most cases, we would recommend going for thicker secondary glazing — 4mm or even 5mm for larger window frame setups. 2mm offers basic protection and is only suitable for very small windows. 3mm is a budget option for smaller windows under 800mm. For most residential windows, 4mm provides the best balance of insulation, rigidity, and cost. Contact our team if you're unsure which thickness is right for your windows.

What is the best type of secondary glazing?

There is no single best type of secondary glazing — the right choice depends on your windows, property type, and primary goals. Aluminium sliding units are popular for most homes. Acoustic glass with a 150–200mm air cavity provides the best sound insulation. For listed buildings, lift-out or magnetic systems are often most appropriate. To discuss which variety of secondary glazing is best suited to your needs, reach out and get in touch with our team today.

What does secondary glazing look like?

Secondary glazing is installed on your internal window frame and consists of panes of glass in a slim aluminium frame fastened to your window reveals or the inner face of your window frame. Sliding, hinged, or lift-out units are available. Once fitted, our unobtrusive solutions are scarcely detectable from inside or outside — ideal for maintaining the external appearance of period and heritage properties. Secondary glazing retains the original window completely while adding a subtle inner layer.

To what extent does secondary glazing reduce sound pollution?

Secondary glazing, when properly specified and installed, will outperform all other forms of glazing — including modern triple-glazed windows — for sound insulation. In most cases, we recommend acoustic glass and an air cavity of no less than 150mm–200mm between the two panes of glass to achieve up to 80% acoustic performance. This makes secondary glazing the best solution for properties near airports, busy roads, industrial estates, or city centres.

What is the difference between glass and acrylic secondary glazing?

Acrylic secondary glazing is generally easier to work with, requiring less specialist equipment than glass, and tends to offer a stronger end result by weight. It is 17 times stronger than glass and delivers near-perfect optical clarity. It is also lighter. However, acrylic can scratch more easily than glass, so we recommend cleaning it with a gentle anti-static detergent. Some customers prefer glass — neither is definitively better. Contact us to discuss which is most suitable for your specific situation.

Will secondary glazing save me money on my heating bills?

Yes — secondary glazing will save you money on heating. With a large enough gap between the window and the secondary glazing, you could see as much as a 4°C improvement in room temperature. That translates to 4°C that you don't have to heat with your central heating system, saving you money every time and reducing the amount of time your heating needs to be on. Energy efficiency savings of up to 60% are achievable, making secondary glazing one of the best home improvement investments available.

How do you measure secondary glazing?

To measure secondary glazing, use a tape measure to record the height and breadth of the frame to which you are connecting the glazing. Add the width of the magnetic tape used for attachment. Note that not all windows are perfectly square — measurements must be taken at multiple points for an accurate result. Alternatively, simply send us a photo of your window with approximate dimensions, and we can advise and quote without visiting your property.

Do you still get condensation with secondary glazing?

Secondary glazing prevents condensation from forming on the inside of your windows by reducing the temperature difference between inside and outside. In most circumstances, installing secondary glazing will remove all condensation from your windows. This is particularly effective in older properties with single-glazed windows where condensation is a chronic problem. The warmer inner surface of acrylic secondary glazing is especially effective at eliminating condensation.

Can secondary glazing be fitted to listed buildings?

Yes — secondary glazing is the preferred solution for listed buildings and conservation areas. Because it is fitted internally and does not alter the external appearance of the window, it is almost always permitted without planning consent. Our unobtrusive solutions are scarcely detectable from inside or outside once fitted. We have extensive experience working on Grade I and Grade II listed properties, period homes, and conservation area dwellings, and can guide you through any local authority requirements.
