Accurate measurements are essential for a correctly fitting secondary glazing installation. This step-by-step guide shows you exactly what measurements to take and how to provide them for a free quote.
A steel measuring tape (not fabric), a notepad, and a camera or phone for photographs. Good photographs are often more useful than measurements alone for complex or shaped windows.
Width: Measure the internal width of the window reveal (the recess in which the window sits) at the top, middle and bottom. Use the smallest measurement. Take this measurement from plaster face to plaster face.
Height: Measure the internal height of the window reveal on the left, centre and right. Use the smallest measurement. Measure from window board (sill) to head (top of reveal).
Reveal depth: Measure the depth of the window reveal — the distance from the inner face of the glass to the internal wall face. This determines whether reveal-fixed (acoustic priority) or face-fixed (thermal priority) installation is possible. A minimum of 75mm is required for face-fixed; 200mm is ideal for acoustic reveal-fixed.
Photographs are invaluable, particularly for: shaped or arched windows; windows with glazing bars; unusual configurations; bay windows; and any window where the reveal profile is complex.
